Hey again! As many of you know, I go for my daily walks in the forest right where I live… and almost daily I meet people that are out walking their dogs. I have always loved dogs and I enjoy “talking” to each and every one of them, ideally petting them as well… However, some dogs are a little insecure and they are nervous around people,…and I want to help them with that….
…so what I do is to stop and ask the owner if it is ok if I pet their dog… and often they are happy for me to do that… But there are others that are not very “conducive” to that…and the dog OWNERS get apprehensive as soon as they see a person down the road… that would be ME approaching them…
…..and guess what happens… their DOG gets apprehensive too…as they pick up on the “energy” of their master…so they then get on “full alert”… … this is a HUGE mistake many, many dog owners make…
So I actually tell them… the more apprehensive YOU get, then you can multiply that x10 for the dog that they own…as now the dog wants to DEFEND their master… but luckily most dog are not aggressive, however, some could still bite you…. unless you are tactful and know how to handle this type of situation.
I STILL like to walk up to the dog as I actually see this as Therapy for the Dog And the Dog owner. … I view myself as a Dog Therapist … .if you like, that will help both the dog and the owner to overcome this fear and apprehension … .so I take my time to talk with them and explain the “situation” and what this will do for their dog.
…so the moral of the story is: help the dog owners understand what happens to their dogs when they, the dog owners are nervous and apprehensive … .and let your dog greet other people so that they will not get apprehensive…. and potentially could bite a person.
Bonus Tip: Suggest to the dog owner that you will “Walk with them” for a couple of minutes and just chat and NOT give any attention to the dog… most dogs will naturally think you are part of the pack…and then start relaxing and easing into the situation… sometimes that is best done PRIOR to even trying to pet the dog… try it and let me know how that goes.
… I am just saying… Do “Suummmthing” about it and see the change it will make for you.
